CHARCOAL

ILLUSTRATION

This semester, I worked primarily in charcoal and India ink, focusing on heavy layering, stark contrast, and expressive linework. I started with a wash of ink to build depth and texture, letting it guide the composition. I drew from my own photography and merged those real-world references with spiritual and religious imagery. Inspired by German realist and surrealist art, I incorporated symbolic elements like teeth, celestial forms, and fragmented text to evoke tension and transformation. The process was physical and intuitive; I tore, scratched, wove, and collaged the surface, allowing the raw emotion and chaotic energy of the materials to speak for themselves
